A month ago, lumpy skin disease struck the first Sardinian cattle farm in Orani : the Zooprophylactic Institute of Teramo, a national reference for the epidemiological surveillance of animals, had identified it with the code 76619.

Since then, the outbreaks have risen to twenty-eight, in the Nuoro, Sassari, and Gallura areas. But over the past thirty days, a chill has fallen between the rural community and the government: the fear is for the survival of the more than 9,000 Sardinian businesses.

The provisional bulletin certified, from June 21st to yesterday evening, 184 sick cattle, 31 deaths and 447 slaughtered, with breeders' confidence plummeting.

"The sacrifices of a lifetime," the accusation rebounds, "risk going up in smoke because of a Region that is simply imposing punitive measures, without listening to us."

The reference is first and foremost to mandatory vaccinations and the related fines, up to €20,000, for non-compliance . This dissatisfaction has reached Cagliari, and Alessandra Todde has tried to reassure everyone.
