The woods on Via Roma will be built. The author of the project Stefano Boeri assures us: «The project is moving forward in the time, ways and with the materials planned from the beginning. The work will be completed by May 2025». The construction site that is to transform the main street of the city into a green embryo is still an embryo, which does not stop generating controversy. Last July, the mayor Massimo Zedda had rejected and scaled down the project.

But nothing has changed and nothing will change, Boeri explains in an interview with Strambata on Radiolina : «The construction site is moving forward with the same number of plants and without any reduction in the green areas».

«No controversy»

The basic idea is simple, therefore revolutionary. Bringing trees, nature "instead of a scorching asphalt airport runway full of car wrecks", that is, Via Roma, says Boeri. "Cagliari is measuring itself against issues that all cities are measuring themselves against, those of shading, of greater pedestrianization, that is, experiencing public space more, increasing spaces for socializing. I am sure that once this walk is built, the advantages will be evident for everyone. I understand the inconveniences associated with a construction site, but in Via Roma these are normal times for a city. I also understand the concerns of the shopkeepers, but I am sure that in the end they will benefit. I am happy that the project is moving forward".

No trench

Once the work on Via Roma is finished, there will be no phase 2 of the waterfront project, that is, the trench, the solution hypothesized to allow the tree-lined square on the sea to take shape until it touches the docks of the port, regulating the traffic of cars. "It wasn't our project," explains Boeri, "we only worked on Via Roma and Piazza Matteotti, now almost finished, then we thought, but they were hypotheses, of a second phase that would extend the greenery and shade. Phase 1 is independent of Phase 2 and can live well without it. In a few months' time," he concludes, "moving on Via Roma will be beautiful."
