Assemini is preparing for 48 hours of heat: between tomorrow (Wednesday) and Thursday, temperatures will reach peaks of 42-43 degrees, bringing the Sardinian town under the scrutiny of the national media.

Mayor Mario Puddu urged residents to exercise extreme caution, emphasizing that Assemini's media coverage is linked to an extreme weather phenomenon that requires collective responsibility: "It is essential to follow basic health rules, especially for the elderly, children, and vulnerable individuals, and to strictly avoid behaviors that could spark fires, given the extremely high risk associated with scorching temperatures. I thank in advance the Civil Protection Department and the Fire Department, who are constantly monitoring the area, but the commitment of every single citizen is needed to avoid critical situations," the mayor stated.

The new urban vision

For Councilor Sabrina Stara, extreme heat is no longer a temporary anomaly, but a "new normal" that requires a drastic change in land management. Stara argues that the Municipality must invest in lightweight but essential infrastructure: "Water fountains, misting systems in squares, shaded shelters, and cooling stations are not mere decorative features, but public health safeguards. Ensuring accessible spaces means protecting the dignity of those who, unable to afford home air conditioning, experience the burden of energy and climate poverty firsthand ."

Interventions on construction and the environment

Councilor Alessandro Casula points to the structural effects of climate change, which are transforming urban centers into heat islands. For the councilor, the mitigation strategy must be radical: "We must address the very nature of our public spaces. It is urgent to invest in a special plan for urban greenery, create widespread shaded areas, and, above all, begin designing streets and squares using next-generation materials that reflect solar radiation instead of accumulating it and releasing it during stifling nights."

Support for vulnerable groups

Diego Corrias argues that limiting ourselves to the usual appeals for individual caution is now anachronistic. The councilor proposes a quantum leap in institutional action: "It's not enough to tell citizens to drink water. We need to establish dedicated social protection services: I envision the active involvement of associations and the Civil Protection Department to organize home grocery deliveries or assisted transportation to cool places for the elderly. Furthermore, we need to identify air-conditioned public spaces where our elderly can safely gather, freeing them from the solitude of heated public squares."

“Green lung” for the city

Finally, Councilor Ignazio Pireddu looks to long-term land use planning to combat excessive urbanization. His vision includes the creation of a large urban park as a natural climate control system: "Climate change is a global challenge that requires bold local responses. In my opinion, the area between Via Coghe, Via Santa Maria, and Sa Costera represents the ideal site for the creation of a large green lung. An investment of this kind would not only lower the perceived temperature, but would also restore to Assemini a livable space and urban regeneration that is essential for the future of generations to come."
