Stories of sea turtle rescues, of safeguarding animals often victims of microplastics that pollute the seas, victims of accidental catches in the Mediterranean Sea.
The story is told by the Crama association, the marine animal recovery center of the Asinara National Park which offers the possibility of remotely adopting injured turtles that need treatment, with high costs that the structure must bear for medical assistance, medicines and food. Born in June 2009, by the will of six young members with technical-scientific training, the Crama center boasts 300 volunteers over the course of its 14 years of activity, who in this period of time have undertaken around 3 thousand interventions, monitoring over 5 kilometers of coastline.
Anyone can submit a request for support to patients of the caretta caretta, green or leatherback turtle species, who, once treated, are released into the sea to return to their natural habitat. The structure which came into operation at the Sea Observatory in 2012, a clinic located in Cala Reale, has adequate spaces, two rooms equipped with three modular tanks each for the hospitalization of animals in need of care.
Their activity is mainly focused on the recovery, care and monitoring of sea turtles and cetaceans, environmental education activities with schools of all levels and scientific research. The association also carries out awareness-raising activities aimed at sea operators, including fishermen, the Port Authority and the Forestry Corps, but also at school groups mainly in Northern Sardinia.
