Established on the island of Asinara immediately after the First World War, Campu Perdu was one of the prison branches capable of hosting up to 30 people . In the near future, the same structure will become, together with Caserma Monda, a permanent residential school , a venue for the programming of university and para-university courses and internships , with reception, educational and research purposes.

The restoration work on the building, entrusted to the Sicilian company Venezia, began last Wednesday , thanks to funds partly financed by the Por Sardegna of the Ministry of the Environment and partly deriving from the Park Authority's own resources for a total of 2 million and 100 thousand euros.

The plan includes the renovation of existing buildings and the creation of all the infrastructures necessary for the operation of the property for the enhancement of low environmental impact tourist services . The resources included will be used both for the complete restoration of the building called Monda barracks to be used as a guesthouse and for the recovery of the prison complex, through the creation of a multipurpose conference room, with toilets and other service areas.

«In particular, the preliminary project identifies the Campu Perdu prison branch as the apex of a system of satellite activities to be established in the vast area of the Asinara territory , with the aim of making the entire intervention a “pilot project”, replicable in other contexts of the island», explains the director of the Park, Vittorio Gazale.

The plan, in fact, offers an answer to the needs expressed by the Authority to establish educational and hospitality activities in the complex without losing the prison memory of the place.

The intervention takes on the character of a human settlement thanks to a process of transformation of the structure, intended to host a center for teaching and research. In particular , a reception area is planned, that is, an information point, a memory space, a bookshop and a small library with a staff office .

Other rooms will house the bedrooms, all equipped with a bathroom , while the teaching, of a congressional nature will be located in the great hall. Finally, the recreational space will be used to create a kitchen and a canteen space.

Both buildings, Monda barracks and prison, are in critical structural conditions, therefore the interventions will be concentrated on the external walls with consolidation of the stone walls, replacement of the external fixtures with elements that can improve energy performance . Furthermore, iron works, gates, internal fixtures, coverings and false ceilings will be removed, and some portions of walls and the crawl space will be demolished.
