Over two million bees burned alive. This is the balance of the fire, of arson origin, which occurred last night in Villacidro .

The flames started from triggers created by currently unknown arsonists and devastated the hives.

Valerio Deidda, beekeeper and member of the OP Terrantiga consortium, arrived on site after having warned the owners of the company but was unable to do anything to save some hives, they were all incinerated by now.

Eight hives survived the fire because the primers went out due to humidity.

"It is an episode of great cruelty - comments the president of Terrantiga, Francesco Caboni - which also affected the forces of order: there was no reason to demonstrate all this hatred towards animals so precious to the environment and biodiversity . The damage exceeds 30,000 euros, but the cruelty of this ignoble action hurts more than the damage".

Fires affecting beehives are a big problem in Sardinia, and beekeepers are in dire straits as insurance plans are currently non-existent.

OP Terrantiga has already assured the beekeeper that steps will soon be taken to help him.
