An abandoned fishing net that was still active was recovered near Capo Ferrato.
The operation coordinated by the regional directorate of Civil Protection, with the intervention of the patrol boat from the base of the Forestry and Environmental Surveillance Corps of Villasimius, the diving group of the Sud Sinnai club and the Municipality of Muravera which disposed of the recovered material.
The net was placed on a 30 meter seabed: a death trap for various species of fish which, upon landing on the obstacle, were unable to free themselves. Abandoned for some time along its entire length and also stranded on the rocky seabed, the net required a delicate recovery intervention by the Sus Sinnai divers who, using lifting balloons inflated with deep air, removed the fishing net itself up to the surface, allowing the Forestry Corps staff to hoist the entire net on board and then deliver it to the municipal operators.
The intervention is part of environmental protection activities, in particular aimed at protecting marine fauna, seabed flora but also from the pollution that would have been caused by the deterioration of the synthetic plastic material of which the net is made.
«It is important to remember – says Paride Cardia, president of Sub Sinnai – that the net constitutes a great danger also for divers who, when approaching it, can become stranded and even be unable to free themselves, which is precisely the reason that led a local diver to report the net abandoned".
