A new step forward for the Alta Trexenta irrigation project . The final operational meeting between local administrators and designated technicians was held in the municipality of Mandas, where they were busy defining the specific areas to be involved in the project. Representatives from the municipalities of Mandas, Selegas, Siurgus Donigala, Gesico, Suelli, Guamaggiore, and Guasila attended the meeting. Together with the planners, they identified areas of approximately 400 hectares each for the future irrigation network. Following the meeting, site visits were conducted to verify the areas in the field.
The Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Agriculture, Umberto Deidda, emphasized the importance of the moment: "The initiative is the result of collaboration between municipalities, the Region, and citizens. We are very pleased because we are reaching a first concrete milestone after years of work." The goal, he explained, is to provide new opportunities for the agricultural sector , promote sustainable development, and combat depopulation.
The project dates back to 2017, when the sponsoring municipalities signed a memorandum of understanding to initiate a study into the feasibility of bringing water to the Alta Trexenta countryside. After years of discussions, the operational phase has now begun: the design will be handled by the Land Reclamation Consortium's technicians, with the direct involvement of the local authorities. This initiative is also considered strategic to bridge a historical gap: despite the presence of the Mulargia basin in the Siurgus Donigala area, many areas of Alta Trexenta have remained without irrigation. The goal is to bring water to farms, enhancing the value of thousands of hectares and boosting the local economy. The process will continue with further local development meetings, essential steps to finalize and implement the project.
