The young Risso's whale spotted and monitored since last Thursday in the waters of Punta Negra, Alghero, has died. The cetacean was constantly monitored by Alberto Ruiu, head of the regional network of the Capo Caccia-Isola Piana Marine Protected Area, along with the Alghero Port Authority, the Crama Asinara, the Environmental Surveillance Corps, the Regional Marine Fauna Network, and the Barracelli of the Municipality of Alghero.
It was a calf, and according to technicians from the Marine Protected Area and the Regional Marine Fauna Network, there are two hypotheses regarding its arrival on the coast: it may have gotten lost after leaving its mother, or it may have been abandoned by the group due to health problems.
Experts explain that Risso's dolphins can nurse until they are 3-4 years old, a fact that helps explain the serious state of malnutrition in which the little one arrived in the waters of Alghero, likely due to a complete lack of food. Despite monitoring and the efforts of the technicians involved, unfortunately, it was not possible to save him. The Istituto Zooprofilattico of Sassari will determine the exact cause of death on Monday.
