The concrete floor slab gave way and a woman sank into a two-meter-deep burial pit.
It happened this morning at the Alghero Cemetery.
A 74-year-old woman was walking among the graves on a concrete walkway and suddenly found herself underground. The floor crumbled beneath her feet and the unfortunate woman ended up in a rather deep hole. She landed on her feet and then collapsed.
On site, 118 with an ambulance and the firefighters. The doctor disinfected the wounds on her legs and laid the 74-year-old on a stretcher, then the firefighters went into action to recover her.
The president of the cemetery commission, Christian Mulas, who, following numerous reports, had already publicly signaled the urgency of an inspection by the relevant commission, has called for an urgent visit to the cemetery for Monday.
"Unfortunately, the accident confirms the no longer postponable need for a deep and structural redevelopment of the entire cemetery area," he explains. "From the first testimonies collected, it appears that one of the slabs covering the walkways (slabs that act as a cover for the space below where the burials are located) has given way, causing a situation of grave danger. This is the only field inside the cemetery where earth has not been used to fill the void below, thus increasing the risks for visitors," Mulas warns.
