A mountain of sea urchin shells, about 5000 specimens, was found in recent days by the Barracellare Company on the northern coast of Alghero. The echinoderms had been emptied, probably to obtain the delicious red pulp.
The news alarmed the president of the Porto Conte Park, Emiliano Orrù, and the president of the Environment Commission, Christian Mulas.
"Despite the absolute ban on collecting sea urchins in the Marine Protected Area of Capo Caccia and Isola Piana and the limited collection by authorized operators in other bodies of water, we are sadly witnessing the continued violation of regulations, resulting in a natural landscape ruined by incivility and degradation. The abandoned shells are not only clear evidence of irresponsible behavior, but they constitute a serious danger to the local marine ecosystem, compromising biodiversity and threatening the balance of the environment. It is essential that all citizens and institutions join forces to protect our natural heritage and combat these harmful actions with greater rigor and awareness. We also invite people to avoid purchasing uncertified products because, not being traceable, they can also cause serious health problems", write Orrù and Mulas.
In the meantime, surveillance systems will be strengthened, including with the use of camera traps.
