Approximately 90 inmates—all of them foreigners—have been suddenly transferred from Regina Coeli prison in Sardinia, including about sixty to Bancali and the Alghero prison. This move is believed to be due to the collapse of part of the roof of the Roman facility, according to the FNS-CSL union.
"We understand the emergency," says Antonio Cannas, regional delegate for the Sappe prison police union, "but we remain perplexed by the choice of a prison like the one in Alghero, for example."
UilPa is also unconvinced about what has happened: "The numerical emergency regarding prison overcrowding," reports general secretary Michele Cireddu, "has also moved to Sardinia because, while initially at least the colonies met the regulatory capacity, the department has now identified Sardinia as a container to be filled to the brim."
Meanwhile, representatives from professional organizations are trying to understand the exact numbers of the transfer and what its impact will be on other inmates and, above all, on the prison police force.
