The 4.2 magnitude earthquake which occurred at 3.35 in the Campi Flegrei "was the largest in the last 40 years " and "occurred during a swarm that began on Tuesday morning at 5, characterized by 60 events of lower intensity".

Mauro Antonio Di Vito, director of the Vesuvian Observatory of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, said this.

The earthquake, he added, "is part of the bradyseismic dynamics, which has undergone a slight acceleration in recent days", that is to say that "the process is continuing and the speed of ground lifting is slightly intensifying".

And the question - disturbing - that is circulating is, inevitably: is there a risk of a next, devastating eruption of Vesuvius, like the one that buried Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 AD?

«The situation remains constant monitored by the Ingv-Osservatorio Vesuviano, by Irea and by Plinius», explain the regional authorities, with the governor Vincenzo De Luca who met with the Head of the regional Civil Protection, Italo Giulivo, for an updated verification of the events seismic events which are affecting the Phlegraean area and also the western area of Naples.

Meanwhile, evacuation plans in the event of an eruption are also being dusted off on the web.

Plans which, after the first emergency, provide for the transfer of displaced people from the Vesuvian area to all Italian regions, including Sardinia, through a "twinning" system.

If the worst scenario were to occur, the fleeing population of Naples, the Campi Flegrei area and the other municipalities in the Neapolitan area would be concentrated by Civil Protection and law enforcement in a series of "waiting points".

Then the transfers would begin, via bus, train and ship to the reception destinations.

According to the current emergency plan , Sardinia would be allocated, in particular, the displaced people from Pompeii and Posillipo (which together have a population of around 50 thousand inhabitants ).
