Five agents of the local police of Naples were surrounded and attacked by a few dozen migrants during a check against illegal markets near Piazza Garibaldi , in the central railway station area.

Officers were carrying out a kidnapping of a Nigerian woman who was selling ethnic takeaway food without authorization , when she started screaming, throwing spoonfuls of soup at the agents and on their service car .

The shouts brought about a hundred migrants who surrounded and beaten the fighters. The request for reinforcements was immediately launched via radio and other patrols arrived on the spot, dispersing the crowd .

The woman, a 30-year-old Nigerian nationality, during the attack tried to escape into the alleys of the area but was stopped and taken to the offices of the local police command where she was reported.

"The process of restoring the rules is tiring, but we do not intend to retreat", said the mayor of Naples Gaetano Manfredi , expressing "the utmost solidarity of the Administration and of the entire city with the Municipal Police officers attacked last night in Piazza Garibaldi" .

"For several weeks - remembers the mayor - the work of controlling the territory and contrasting all forms of illegality has continued incessantly : an activity, carried out on some occasions together with the other police forces, which is producing the first concrete results. The Municipality's action plan is working and these episodes will not stop it: Piazza Garibaldi and the nearby areas deserve decorum and dignity ".
