The new security package was approved by the Council of Ministers and includes numerous innovations. Among these there are more protections for law enforcement officers who are subjected to violence or injuries, a new crime to punish those who participate in or organize riots in prisons (with a harsher sentence with imprisonment of up to 6 years), the fight against occupations abusive with lightning procedures for the release of properties , the crackdown on fraud against the elderly , and specific anti-pickpocketing and anti-begging measures by minors.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said she was "proud" of the provision which received the green light from Palazzo Chigi.
«The security package approved today by the Council of Ministers - comments the group leader of the Fratelli d'Italia in the Chamber, Tommaso Foti - represents a great victory for the Meloni government and the Fratelli d'Italia, which has always been in the front row in carrying out a battle against illegal occupations. Among the measures, in addition to greater protection for the police and a new crime to punish those who participate in and organize riots in prisons, a significant crackdown is in fact foreseen for those who occupy the houses. Together with the introduction of a new crime which punishes with imprisonment from 2 to 7 years anyone who, with violence or threats, occupies or holds another person's property without title, a very fast procedural process is also envisaged to obtain the release of the same and the its return to those entitled to it. Citizens - he concludes - know that the State has returned to their side to protect their rights , finally achieving what should have been done a long time ago".
As far as law enforcement is concerned, the carrying of a second firearm in addition to the standard one will be permitted, even when they are off duty. And if they are victims of personal injuries, the penalties against the attackers are harsher. Again: a year and a half in prison for those who damage state property; road blocks become a crime (therefore no longer just an administrative sanction); and heavy fines for those who do not stop at checkpoints.
