Pain and deep dismay in Bari for the death of the surgeon of the local hospital Raffaele Sebastiani, who suffered a heart attack that left him no way out after a 12-hour shift in the operating room.

On Tuesday Sebastiani, 61, married and father of two daughters, according to what transpires, had worked from 8 to 14, then disconnected and came back on call at night. In fact, he had to return to the hospital and for 12 hours he was engaged in the operating room for emergencies on patients who were also positive for Covid, a detail that would have required the use of protective devices that would have made his life even heavier. work.

Back home, he fell ill and shortly after death.

What many are now wondering is whether excessive workload played a role in Raffaele Sebastiani's death. It is difficult to establish a certain link of cause and effect, but both the health company and the unions want to investigate and have asked to know precisely the shifts that the doctor had taken in the hours before his death.

"For two years now, health workers have been under pressure with shifts and a workload that is not always sustainable," said Antonio Mazzarella of CGIL Medici. Stefano Andrisciani of Anaoo confirmed that "certainly what the doctors experienced is a period of great stress".
