For the sixth consecutive year, Sardinia remains the Italian region with the lowest fertility rate and among the top regions for population decline.

This is what emerges from the Istat demographic indicators published today. Specifically, the island continues to have (2025 data) a fertility rate below unity, equal to 0.85, a decrease compared to the 2024 figure (0.91) . Furthermore, Sardinia is the region with the greatest population decline (-5.1 per thousand) after Basilicata (-9.0 per thousand) and Molise (-6.5 per thousand).

The demographic winter is affecting the whole of Italy: in 2025, there were 355,000 births, a decrease of 3.9% compared to 2024. Deaths, on the other hand, were 652,000, a decrease of 0.2%.

Istat also emphasizes that the "natural balance" (the difference between births and deaths) is "largely negative," approximately -296,000, a worsening compared to 2024, when it was -283,000. Nationally, the fertility rate also continues to decline, falling to 1.14 children per woman in 2025.
