"I was experiencing this discomfort, an existential anguish, but I didn't think I would end up killing, I can't explain what happened that night, unfortunately it happened." These are the words that the 17-year-old, who killed his father, mother and 12-year-old brother in Paderno Dugnano, in the Milan area, repeats to those who are meeting him in these hours in the first reception center of the Beccaria juvenile prison.
In the morning he received a visit from his trusted lawyer, Amedeo Rizza. "He is exhausted," the lawyer explained, "and he is becoming aware of what he did, even if he can't explain it to himself."
Meanwhile, after the shocking incident, public opinion, institutions and politics are questioning the causes of the "discomfort" that led the young man to kill, the latest in a long trail of blood and crimes committed by very young people in recent months.
Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara also spoke on the issue. "There are various analyses that can be done," the minister said. "There is a discomfort among our young people, and I also want to emphasize that the media portrays young Italians as if they were all unmotivated, problematic and so on. I go around schools and it's not like that: I see so many wonderful young people with so much enthusiasm."
On the other hand, Valditara added, "there is also an objective discomfort, which must be addressed in all respects and which is probably connected to some elements: the first is the conditioning of social media and then the consequences of isolation from Covid. Certainly - concluded the minister - it is a complex society that we are facing and which therefore requires increasingly effective responses from schools".
