Stop the single nuclear waste repository? This was announced by the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin , speaking at a debate on energy organized by the newspaper “La Stampa”.
"We are studying new low-intensity radioactive waste repositories. We have now discarded the idea of a single center, because it is illogical in terms of efficiency, but we can think about moving forward with the 22 already existing ones ," said the government representative Meloni.
A theme, that of the single repository, that has alarmed Sardinia for years. Of the 51 potential sites identified as suitable by Sogin, 8 are located on the Island, with 14 Municipalities in the crosshairs: Albagiara, Assolo, Usellus, Mandas, Siurgus Donigala, Segariu, Villamar, Setzu, Tuili, Turri, Ussaramanna, Nurri, Ortacesus and Guasila . All Municipalities that, as well as the Region, have repeatedly expressed their opposition.
That National Charter of Suitable Sites, Fratin added, "is now out of date." "I'm starting to discard the hypothesis of my predecessors," the minister said, "because it seems illogical to me in terms of efficiency and functionality to have only one center at a national level: it would mean having waste travel from Turin to Palermo every day . Even the National Charter of 51 Suitable Sites is now out of date. That's why the evaluation I'm making at a ministerial level is to create more deposits, or to continue with the existing ones ."
