The Sardinia Region, together with Tuscany and Umbria, expressed a negative opinion on the Nuclear Decree at today's Unified Conference.
The other Regions, however, expressed a majority favorable opinion on the measure delegating the law on sustainable nuclear energy to the Government, underlining however the need for "greater involvement of the Regions in defining subsequent legislative acts."
The conditional yes expressed by the Conference of the Regions requires that an agreement be reached between the Government and the Regions on the subsequent implementing legislative decrees.
"The Sardinia Region," explained Regional Councilor for the Environment Rosanna Laconi , "cannot accept that local governments are excluded from decisions on such significant issues, nor can it support a regulatory framework that leaves the initiative to private individuals on issues of public health and safety. The bill, which mandates the government to adopt legislative decrees aimed at introducing so-called sustainable nuclear energy production into the national energy mix, presents numerous substantive and procedural issues, among which one particularly alarming element stands out," Laconi emphasized. Namely, "the possibility that the siting criteria for new plants and their associated waste repositories could be defined based on the requests of private proponents, rather than through prior mapping and assessments agreed upon with the Regions."
