The Ministry of Health has asked the Lazio Region for a detailed report on the death of the newborn at the Pertini hospital in Rome.

We have to wait 60 days, many are needed for the results of the autopsy, to establish the contours of the tragedy that took place at the Pertini hospital in Rome between 7 and 8 January, when the newborn - three days old - died crushed from his mother who, devastated by labor, fell asleep after breastfeeding him in her room .

The woman tested negative for all toxicological tests and therefore the hypothesis that she had taken drugs or other substances that night was set aside.

The investigators acquired a whole series of documents in the hospital, including the woman's medical records to ascertain, among other things, whether she had taken the baby in her arms in the late afternoon and why she remained with the newborn until the evening, when the nurse on duty noticed the accident . In essence, the magistrates must clarify whether the protocols have been violated and whether there has been negligence, as reported by some family members of the little victim.

For the moment , the investigation file for manslaughter opened by the Capitoline prosecutors remains against unknown persons . Asl Roma 2 underlines that, as per practice, "a clinical audit has been activated to verify the correctness and adherence to the best pactice and the appropriateness of the procedures". The health company underlines that Pertini in Rome «is a point of reference and in particular gynecology and obstetrics guarantee quality assistance to women during pregnancy» .

The practice of rooming-in, i.e. the possibility that after the birth the newborn stays in the same room as the mother, as the ASL further underlines, " is by now consolidated in the national and international context to support contact between the newborn and the mother from the first hours after the birth ".

The family is desperate and closed in pain, the father told what happened to his wife in an interview: « Her water broke at 4 in the morning, she then spent 17 hours in labor before giving birth. She was exhausted, but they immediately brought her baby to breastfeed and also demanded that she change his diaper on her own. But she couldn't stand up, she had repeatedly begged the department staff to take the little one to the nursery for a few hours to be able to rest a bit. He couldn't take it anymore, but the answer was always no ».

«Many women – concluded the man – are left alone in the wards also due to the anti-Covid restrictions. The protocols should be reviewed.
