She would have suffocated her four-month-old daughter Alice on November 15, 2021. After the tragedy, she and her husband gave birth to another child, Mattia. And the same atrocious fate would have been reserved for him too, when he was only two months old, on 25 October 2022.

Investigations continue into the double infanticide committed by Monia Bortolotti, a young 27-year-old mother arrested in Pedrengo (Bergamo) by the police after a long investigation which swept away the hypothesis of two dramatic and close cot deaths.

The suspicions arose after the death of the second baby. Medical investigations have in fact revealed that death was caused by "acute mechanical asphyxia due to compression of the chest". A suffocation obtained, according to investigators, "through a voluntary action, which highlighted the objective of causing the child's death".

At that point the Bergamo Prosecutor's Office also ordered the exhumation of her little sister, buried in the Pedrengo cemetery but whose little body was found already in an advanced state of decomposition due to previous damage to the coffin which had not allowed for good preservation of the body of the little girl.

Which is why the test was inevitably distorted and did not provide conclusive information for the investigations.

However, the Carabinieri of the operational section of the Bergamo company continued to investigate in the traditional way, interviewing doctors, relatives, specialists and friends of the woman and analyzing extensive medical documentation acquired.

All this allowed the emergence of serious indications of guilt against the woman also for Alice's death, in particular a series of conflicting statements provided by the twenty-seven year old over time and which did not correspond to what was ascertained by the police.

In fact, the little girl, although born 7 months old and slightly underweight, upon discharge from the hospital and in subsequent pediatric visits was found to be essentially healthy, like her brother: therefore, according to the investigators, her death also probably occurred not due to natural causes, but due to asphyxiation, so as not to leave external signs on the corpse visible upon external examination, just as happened with his little brother, probably using a pillow in both cases.

As for the reasons for the two crimes, which were allegedly committed "with clarity", the investigators hypothesize that the 27-year-old could not stand the "uninterrupted" crying of the two children.

After the two tragedies, Monia Bortolotti, born in India but adopted by an Italian family at the age of one, has repeatedly used social media to mourn those she called "her angels", then sharing her messages on groups that deal of Sids, or cot death. But for the investigators the truth about the deaths of Alice and Mattia would be another, much more atrocious.
