The online petition on Change.org to eliminate the limited number of students in Medicine collected almost 33 thousand signatures in 48 hours. So much so that the president of the Conference of Italian Rectors Salvatore Cuzzocrea has taken a clear contrary position.

"Imagining generalized access to the Faculty of Medicine effectively means planning a drastic collapse in the undisputed quality of the courses that train doctors and surgeons in Italy, and undermining the European recognition of the degree itself ," he said.

«Universities have already made an incredible effort to increase the numbers of those who enter medical degree courses every year. An opening calibrated to the needs of the healthcare system is already underway: in the next 7 years the places will in fact grow by 30 thousand units ", he recalled.

«In recent days the debate on access to medicine seems to have had a sudden revival – he continues -. Many speak in favor of the abolition of programming and shared rules at European level for the training of new doctors. Universities have already made an incredible effort to increase the numbers of those who enter medical degree courses each year so as to preserve, first and foremost, the quality of training for those who will have to deal with citizens' health tomorrow. Secondly, to guarantee European validity to Italian qualifications."
