The DNA of a yet-unidentified man was found in Chiara Poggi's oral swab. The "Y" genetic material was found by experts appointed by the Pavia Court as part of the new investigation into the Garlasco crime.
It's unknown who it belongs to. However, analyses rule out the possibility that it belongs to Alberto Stasi, convicted of the crime, or to Andrea Sempio, recently registered as a suspect.
The sensational investigative breakthrough would therefore lead to the entry of an "unknown person" into the crime scene: the swab had never been analyzed in 18 years.
The DNA was found in the gauze used to take samples during the autopsy.
The Pavia Prosecutor's Office may now be considering the possibility that multiple people were involved in the crime: additional DNA that does not belong to Sempio was found on Chiara Poggi's fingernails—and that's where the new investigation began.
But according to leaks, the test will be repeated: it cannot be ruled out that it could be a case of contamination.
The family lawyer
"There was no DNA from unknown individuals at the crime scene, and obviously not even on Chiara's body," commented Gian Luigi Tizzoni, the Poggi family's lawyer. He said, "This is a finding that, as far as we know, is completely unfounded and once again demonstrates how, in the absence of objective evidence alternative to the established procedural truth that identified Stasi as the perpetrator, it advances unfounded hypotheses."
