About 150 fines, mostly for speeding, raised in recent years to the mayor of Benevento, Clemente Mastella, and unpaid for the acceptance of the recipient's appeals: an investigation by "Le Iene" puts travel in the spotlight , especially in Rome, of the former Minister of Justice.

It all started with a statement from the “Altra Benevento” association, chaired by Gabriele Corona, tenacious and historic political opponent of Mastella.

"I am the holder of a decree from the Ministry of the Interior which provides for personal security measures for reasons also of public order - this is Mastella's version -. I do not drive and have not had a license for fifty years, but in the exercise of mayor happen to use the service car. The safety reasons that from time to time make it appropriate or necessary to exceed the speed limits are therefore strictly the responsibility of the driver ".

The mayor of Benevento does not have an escort but his "personal safety" requires that he be accompanied by an agent when traveling.

"When infringements of the Highway Code intervene, for such irregularities - continues Mastella - I limit myself to representing what the driver reports to me from time to time in order to request the filing of the offense to the Prefect competent for the area or to the Municipality of Rome. as far as I know, the fines in question have been filed in many cases in acceptance of the requests made by the undersigned as a subject subject to security measures. I also reiterate that for all my departures for institutional and non-institutional activities, of my mandate, I have never asked for a reimbursement of any kind that would burden the economy of the municipality. That is, I pay for everything, board and lodging. Always for five years ".

The fines canceled have been raised in many cases in Rome, for entering the Ztl or exceeding the speed limits, as well as during travel to and from the capital. Trips that, according to “Altra Benevento”, would not have involved the personal safety reasons given in the appeals to justify the high speed.
