Goodbye to the crime of abuse of office, away with the possibility of prosecutors to appeal against acquittal sentences, a tightening on the publication of interceptions in the press and greater guarantees for suspects in the matter of pre-trial detention.

This is what the bill presented by the Keeper of Justice Carlo Nordio provides, the first piece of justice reform, approved yesterday by the Council of Ministers.

But the package of rules that will now be presented to Parliament is already causing controversy.

"The reform will introduce new spaces of impunity," thundered the leader of the M5S Giuseppe Conte . "It is a mistake to grasp Berlusconi's death to carry out reforms on the shoulder," says Pd secretary Elly Schlein instead. But criticisms of the bill also come from members of the judiciary.

For Minister Nordio, the package is the result of "six months of intense work" and represents "the first step towards a radical reform in the sense of guarantee", as well as a "tribute" for Berlusconi's battle "for a more just justice".
