«I haven't slept or eaten for three days, I no longer live, I constantly receive phone calls with death threats, messages ; they even called my 85-year-old mother, my whole family is in the pillory ».

Andrea Leombruni speaks three days after the death of the bear Amarena : the man has teary eyes and is in the square of his house in San Benedetto dei Marsi, where the fact took place, while a relative stands guard on the balcony, because they are afraid of retaliation.

He shot the bear out of fear, he said, but didn't want to kill her: « I found her inside my property, it was an impulsive, instinctive act. I suddenly found this bear nearby and fired without aiming , the rifle had only one shot».

«You have to go through it to understand what I'm feeling now – he continues -. I was wrong, I realized it immediately after the shot was fired, I called the carabinieri».

His wife also speaks up: «This violence and this martyrdom they are perpetrating to us is not right. There is the prosecutor who investigates and they are entitled to do so, to judge. We will surely and justly be punished, but why do we have to live under guard? Why should we be afraid to live?”.
