The Trieste Public Prosecutor's Office has opened a case for manslaughter into the death of Denise Marzi Wildauer, a sixty-year-old woman from Trieste, who died in hospital after being hit by a shot fired during a hunting trip in Basovizza, on the Trieste Karst. Il Piccolo reports.

According to what has been reconstructed so far, on Thursday morning Marzi was walking in the woods with another person who was taking part in the hunting trip, an 80-year-old man from Muggia (Trieste). The shot would have been fired accidentally from the latter's rifle and would have hit the woman in the legs and stomach. The Flying Squad and the scientific police are investigating the case, coordinated by the prosecutor Ilaria Iozzi.

The agents forwarded the documents to the magistrate, including the testimonies of those who were present that morning in the clearing. Il Piccolo today also published the reconstruction of the accident provided by the 80-year-old, who, speaking to the newspaper on Thursday, before the woman died in hospital, had said that he had been suddenly hit by a branch that had moved his gun, triggering it. Marzi was right behind, three or four meters away, and was hit.

The old man allegedly gave first aid to the woman while his other hunting companions called for help. "I am heartbroken," the man repeated several times, "an accident has happened, something that should not happen."
