Tittia 's attack was in vain as he fought until the end to win his second Palio in Siena in a year : Giuseppe Zedde , known as Gingillo, triumphed at the Palio dell'Assunta on Anda e Bola, a 9-year-old bay gelding, leading Valdimontone to victory after 13 years.

For Zedde, born and raised in Siena but son of Antonio, originally from Noragugume, this is the fourth victory at the Palio.

A forceful victory after 35 minutes of frenetic play with rival districts Leocorno and Civetta, Aquila and Pantera battling it out between the ropes.

The Drappellone, designed by Francesco De Grandi, will then join the other 44 in the contrada's museum on Via dei Sordi. Only one fall was recorded, that of the Bruco jockey.

Madonna, who treated herself to the spectacle of the Palio for her 67th birthday, also watched the triumph of Gingillo Anda and Bola from a window in Piazza del Campo . The pop star had arrived in the afternoon and was seen getting out of a van in Piazza Indipendenza before heading to Palazzo d'Elci. Her birthday celebrations continued with about thirty friends at a hotel in the historic center.

The Italian actors Maurizio Lastrico, Matteo Martari and Pietro Sermonti were also guests of the Municipality of Siena.
