"Serious disturbances occurred last night and especially overnight in the Regina Coeli prison in Rome, where first some inmates from the sixth section (142 in total) delayed returning to their cells and then others from the third section (which holds 217) threw the camping canisters they had at the very few prison police officers on duty and started fires. The situation was somewhat resolved, and not without immense difficulty, around 5:00 am , thanks to the intervention of the acting commander of the unit and other officers called from rest to lend a hand to the few people present. This time too, the officers, with competence , professionalism and sacrifice and at their own risk and peril, put a patch on the situation, but we fear that in the absence of decisive interventions, it will not always be like this."

This was announced by Gennarino De Fazio, general secretary of the Uilpa Penitentiary Police .
