A 31-year-old man died last night in hospital in Livorno, where he had been taken after being found in a parking lot with head wounds consistent with those caused by a firearm.

The Flying Squad has launched a homicide investigation, trying to reconstruct the context of what happened.

According to police reports, the man, who is believed to be originally from Turkey, was found bleeding on the ground around midnight in a parking lot on Via di Quercianella, near a senior center in Castellaccio, a hilltop village behind Livorno.

Residents reported that several gunshots were heard during the night, but the alarm was apparently raised by a couple of passersby who saw the man on the ground in the parking lot.
