The trial on the kidnapping and death of Giulio Regeni , the Friulian researcher brutally killed in Cairo and found dead in February 2016, began today and has already been interrupted.

The III Court of Assizes of Rome decided to return the documents to the judge who had ordered the indictment of the four Egyptian 007 accused but absent during the trial. According to the judges, there is no proof that they are aware of the trial, which therefore cannot go on.

In the opinion of the Assize Court "the decree that ordered the judgment was notified to the accused, however not present at the preliminary hearing, by delivering a copy of the deed to the appointed legal counsel, on the assumption that they had voluntarily withdrawn from the knowledge of documents of the procedure "reads the provision.

But he's not sure if that's the case. According to the Assize Court, one cannot be certain "of the actual knowledge of the trial by the accused, nor of their voluntary removal from the proceedings". The judges discussed it in a council chamber which lasted over five hours, at the end of which they canceled the act by which the judge ordered the indictment of the accused last May.

The preliminary hearing starts again: the judge will now have to use all the tools, including a new rogatory letter with Egypt, to make the accused's knowledge of the proceedings against them effective and not just presumed.

THE INVESTIGATIONS - The four National Security agents - General Sabir Tariq, Colonels Usham Helmi, Athar Kamel Mohamed Ibrahim and Magdi Ibrahim Abdelal Sharif - are accused in various ways of multiple kidnapping, complicity in aggravated murder and concurrence in personal injury aggravate.

Eight witnesses heard by the prosecutor who accuse them. In the process, in addition to Regeni's parents, the presidency of the Council of Ministers also constituted a civil party.

"We believe it important that the Italian government has decided to appear as a civil party - the comment of the lawyer Alessandra Ballerini, lawyer of the Regeni family, leaving the Rebibbia bunker room -. We note with bitterness the decision of the Court that rewards the Egyptian arrogance. It is a setback, but we are not giving up. We demand from our justice that those who tortured and killed Giulio do not go unpunished. I ask all of you to make known the names of the 4 defendants and reiterate it, so that they cannot say that they did not know " .
