"End the gender gap in the historic Genoa regatta."

In anticipation of the 71st edition of the Regatta of the Ancient Italian Maritime Republics, the mayor of Genoa is working to equalize the compensation provided for Genoese male and female crews.

"By examining the Regatta documents, we discovered that, for the 2025 edition, the budget for the men's galleon, consisting of eight rowers and a coxswain, was €27,000, while that for the women's crew, with the same composition, was €9,000," Salis emphasizes. " That is, the men received €3,000 each, and the women €1,000 . And the same was true in 2024. It was even worse in 2023, when the men's crew was scheduled to receive €2,000 each plus a €1,000 prize, and the women's crew was scheduled to receive €200 each plus a €500 prize."

"I have dedicated my life to sport and to overcoming all forms of gender pay gaps," Salis concludes, "so, supported by the invaluable work of the municipal offices, I immediately worked to ensure that the women's galleon's pay would be equal to that of the men's galleon starting with the 2026 edition. It's a small gesture, but I hope it will have great symbolic value in starting to break down dynamics that can no longer be part of our time."

The mayor sent a letter to her counterparts in Pisa, Amalfi, and Venice to announce the decision and initiate a shared process to update the current firearms regulations, which have been in place since 2002.
