Lots of flowers , the banner of the University of Genoa , the students of Professor Monica Montefalcone and the friends of her daughter Giorgia Sommacal , the professors, and many relatives and acquaintances.
The Church of San Francesco in Genoa's Pegli was packed this morning for the funeral of Monica Montefalcone and Giorgia Sommacal, the two women who died during their dramatic dive in the Maldives.
The bodies were laid out in two light-colored wooden coffins, separated by a photograph of the mother and daughter, together, before a sea of sapphires. The funeral was officiated by the Bishop of Genoa, Monsignor Marco Tasca.
According to the family's wishes, her ashes will be scattered at Capo Mannu , "on 'her' sea," in the words of her husband, Carlo Sommacal, from Montefalcone, "that paradise she loved so much and where she spent her holidays for 50 years, our favorite place. My wife always told me, and I can't help but do what she told me every time she saw that beach: I will have her cremated and her ashes will be scattered at Capo Mannu."
In addition to Montefalcone and Sommacal, the accident in the Maldivian cave, which occurred on May 14, caused the deaths of three other people: 31-year-old Muriel Oddenino and 31-year-old Federico Gualtieri (whose funerals have already taken place) and 44-year-old diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti, whose final farewell is scheduled for today in Padua.
