"The surgery was completed: it took place without complications and lasted three hours" . This was communicated by the Vatican Press Office, giving an update on the state of health of Pope Francis , hospitalized at the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome , where he underwent an operation, as a result of a "laparocele (a hernia, ed.) imprisoned due to recurrent, painful and worsening sub-occlusive syndromes».

The Holy Father will remain in Gemelli for a few days, under medical supervision. For this reason, the Prefecture of the Papal Household has announced that "the special and general audiences of the Holy Father have been canceled until 18 June ".

Numerous messages of closeness sent to Bergoglio. Among others, that of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella : «Holiness, I wish to send you my best wishes. The whole Italian people are close to you with feelings of affection and solidarity, which I fully mine », wrote Mattarella. Adding: «You can count at this moment, as well as on the prayers of the Catholic faithful, on the sympathetic thoughts of countless people, believers and non-believers. I renew to Your Holiness my most sincere wishes for a peaceful convalescence, and a speedy and complete recovery".
