The mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, signed an ordinance after the huge fire that occurred yesterday in the waste treatment plant in the area of the former Malagrotta mega landfill.

The provision establishes a "ban on outdoor sporting activities, a ban on the collection and consumption of foods of plant origin produced in the identified area, a ban on grazing and scratching of farmyard animals, pending the drafting of the impact model of airborne pollutants , and in any case for a period not exceeding 48 hours, by virtue of the precautionary principle, for a radius of 6 km from the site of the fire and in any case limited to the territory of Rome Capital".

The ordinance also recommends "limiting outdoor activities, with particular attention to those of a recreational nature; keeping windows closed in case of persistent and smelly fumes" and provides "that the Local Police Force of Rome Capital ensures to supervise compliance with the prohibitions and obligations established by this ordinance".

Firefighters worked throughout the night to put out the fire, the causes of which are yet to be ascertained.
