Alarm during the night at the Civil Hospital of Brescia , where a fire broke out in the third medicine department .

One patient was seriously burned and is now in intensive care , while 27 others are under observation . The department is closed.

According to initial reports, the flames started from a mattress that caught fire due to a cigarette lit by the injured patient. The woman, from whom nurses had already taken a pack of cigarettes a few days ago, is now hospitalized in intensive care.

"The fire detection system went off immediately and this allowed us to contain the fire in a very short time and avoid the worst - explains the general director of the Civile, Luigi Cajazzo -. The telealarm and the audible alarm went off immediately, both the department staff and the hospital's internal fire team, active 24 hours a day, intervened. The patients were moved to other departments".
