One year, 5 months and 23 days of imprisonment. This is how the Court of Assizes of Appeal of Turin recalculated the sentence for Chiara Appendino, former mayor of the Piedmontese capital and now a member of parliament for the 5 Star Movement, for the events in Piazza San Carlo in 2017.
The same sentence was given to former Cabinet Chief Paolo Giordana. Maurizio Montagnese, then president of the Turin tourism agency, was acquitted.
Last June 17, the Court of Cassation had annulled the previous appeal ruling , declaring Appendino's criminal liability "irrevocable" , but ordering the Subalpine judges to recalculate his sentence downwards (18 months) because in the meantime there had been some remissions of complaints. The former mayor's lawyers had proposed a one-year prison sentence with the conversion to one hundred thousand euros.
On June 3, 2017, a series of panic attacks among the crowd in Piazza San Carlo watching the Champions League final between Juventus and Real Madrid on a giant screen left more than 1,600 people injured. Two women later died. The trial was about shortcomings in the organization and management of the event.
