In just 7 days, Covid cases in Italy have jumped by 44 percent and are back to exceeding 21 thousand infections, also driven by the Eris variant. Hospitalizations and deaths are also increasing, albeit slightly.

For now, the situation, underlines Francesco Vaia, director of Prevention at the Ministry of Health, "does not cause alarm, but requires prudence".

In fact, a new circular reintroduces mandatory swabs upon patients' arrival at the emergency room, even if only for those with symptoms.

And the problem is not just Italy's. What worries the World Health Organization is the growth trend in view of winter and the few vaccinated people among those at risk.

According to the weekly bulletin of the Ministry of Health and the ISS, the new cases of Covid-19 in Italy have reached 21,309, an increase compared to 14,866 last week. The swabs went from 142,118 to 168,704. The incidence rises in all age groups, but especially in ninety-year-olds, and goes from 24 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants to 31.

Hospitalizations in the medical area rose to 3% compared to 2.7% last week, with 1,872 beds occupied, while intensive care occupancy rose to 0.6% (+0.2%), with 49 beds occupied for Sars-Cov-2.

The new circular from the Ministry of Health provides for tests to detect not only Sars-Cov-2 but also other viruses, such as influenza, adenovirus, syncytial virus and rhinovirus for symptomatic patients upon arrival in the emergency room. And tests for asymptomatic people who must be admitted to departments where immunocompromised patients are present.
