After 5 weeks of decline, the cases of Covid-19 in Italy return to rise , reaching 178 thousand units in 7 days (+ 18.7%). On the other hand, intensive care ( -15.1 %) and ordinary hospitalizations (-15.5%) decreased. Deaths remained stable (+ 1.7%).

This is what emerges from the monitoring of the Gimbe Foundation for the week 17-23 August compared to the previous 7 days. The reversal of the trend of cases, explains the president of the Gimbe Foundation, Nino Cartabellotta, "is partly due to the ' rebound ' resulting from the lower number of infections detected in the long weekend of August , and partly to the likely increase in viral circulation ".

Also in Sardinia , where in the week 17-23 August there is an improving performance for Covid cases currently positive per 100,000 inhabitants (923 compared to over 2 thousand at the end of July), new cases are increasing, marking a + 27.9% r compared to the previous week.

ON THE ISLAND - The most evident increase in the incidence on the island is in the province of Nuoro with a figure of 352 per 100 thousand inhabitants (+ 66.8% compared to the previous week), but also in the metropolitan city of Cagliari, which marks a value of 340 (+ 40.5%). In the other provinces: Oristano 348 (-6%); Sassari 299 (+ 19.9%); South Sardinia 289 (+ 26.8%). The number of beds occupied by Covid patients in the medical area (7.6%) is below the national average, while those in intensive care are still above the national average (4.9%).

VACCINES - Gimbe highlighted the " sensational delay " in the anti Covid vaccination campaign for the fourth dose (second booster): until the morning of August 24 administered in Italy "only 2.18 million doses" (about 10 thousand per day of average in the week) with a decrease of 12.4% over last week, while 14.3 million over 60 and frail people remain uncovered , subjects to whom the campaign is intended. There are also 6.82 million unvaccinated , of which 1.31 million recovered are protected only temporarily. In Italy 7.63 million people are without a third dose, of which 2.56 million recovered who cannot receive it immediately.

THE CAMPAIGN IN SARDINIA - Regarding the vaccination campaign in the island, the percentage of the population over 5 years that has not received any dose of vaccine is equal to 9.7% (Italy average 9.6%) to which the over 5 population must be added years temporarily protected, as she was cured of Covid-19 for less than 180 days, equal to 2.4%. The percentage of those who did not take the third dose is 11.4%, to which the over 5-year-old population recovered for less than 120 days must be added, who cannot receive the third dose immediately, equal to 6.6 %. The vaccination coverage rate with fourth dose is 11.8% , while among children aged between 5 and 11 only 41.6% (Italy average 35.1%) completed the vaccination cycle at which add a further 4.5% (Italy average 3.3%) with the first dose only.
