Five notices of investigation for the death of a two-year-old boy at the Ambarabà Ciccì Coccò nursery school in Soci, in the province of Arezzo, have been served by the Arezzo prosecutor's office ahead of the autopsy.
Among the warnings is one for the teacher who had felt ill and who was the first to help little Leonardo, who died from strangulation by the string of his sweatshirt that got caught in a plant while he was playing.
The suspects, thus informed, can appoint their own consultants to be present at the forensic examination. At the time of the accident, the staff on duty consisted of 14 employees.
The autopsy, ordered by prosecutor Angela Masiello, will be performed early next week. The investigation is being conducted by the Bibbiena Carabinieri.
The promptness of the rescue operations is one of the issues being investigated by the Arezzo prosecutor's office, which has opened a manslaughter investigation. Investigators returned to the facility—which has been placed under seizure—to gather further evidence and have reportedly reviewed footage from the security cameras on the balcony of a house across the street from the daycare center.
According to leaks, investigators are working on what currently appears to be one of the most credible theories: Leonardo may have climbed a tree before getting his sweatshirt string caught in a branch. However, these are just speculations, as no definitive evidence has emerged.
A key aspect of the investigation will be to determine whether there was any responsibility in the child's care and the timely intervention of emergency services, also assessing how much time elapsed between the accident and the emergency call. The nursery school, which serves 60 children, employs 16 people, including 11 teachers.
