Nine years ago, two emissaries of Pope Ratzinger communicated to the Orlandi family the Vatican's willingness to find the body of Emanuela, the fifteen-year-old who disappeared in mysterious circumstances in 1983 .

The Italian judiciary, in exchange, had to grant the exhumation of the body of the boss of the Banda della Magliana, Enrico "Renatino" De Pedis, in the basilica of Sant'Apollinare (where Emanuela had disappeared) and eliminate from the church a stone's throw from Piazza Navona in Rome "a too bulky corpse" whose discovery had caused great embarrassment in the Vatican.

A negotiation that eventually stalled while the Rome Public Prosecutor decided to close the case.

THE INTERVIEW - This is what emerges in an episode of Atlantis, broadcast tonight on La7, from the exclusive interview with the former prosecutor Giancarlo Capaldo, at the time the owner of the investigation, who says he is ready to reveal the names of the two emissaries , but only if he is questioned by the Vatican or Italian judiciary. Of those talks, he says, there would even be a recording. The Pope's emissaries, Capaldo says, “took note of my point of view and reserved the right to hear some people higher up in the hierarchy and to give me an answer. The answer came a few weeks later and was positive. The willingness was to make all their knowledge and indications available to reach this conclusion ".

The negotiation, however, was interrupted: "I am ending my regency because Giuseppe Pignatone is appointed head of the Public Prosecutor's Office and on the other side in the Vatican a series of large maneuvers or underground clashes are started, as is probably the custom in that context, around Pope Ratzinger. And we also know that Pope Ratzinger will not resign within a year ".

“I am happy with this position that Dr. Capaldo has taken after so many years - said Pietro Orlandi, Emanuela's brother who never resigned himself in his search for truth -. I am convinced that he will take the right steps in the right places and I am convinced that he will name these people because in this way there will finally be someone to do justice for Emanuela ”.

The news could lead to the reopening of the investigation: the family's lawyer, Laura Sgrò, presented a request for questioning of Capaldo to the Vatican Promotor of Justice and to the Superior Council of the Judiciary.
