Minister Matteo Salvini launches the Services Conference on the Strait Bridge, to start construction of his flagship work by the summer. But the first trip comes from another ministry, that of the Environment, led by Gilberto Pichetto of Forza Italia.

At the first meeting of the Services Conference, which brings together all the interested parties to speed up the procedures (companies, ministries, local authorities), the Mase in fact asked the Stretto di Messina Spa company for 239 document additions.

According to the ministry, the documentation presented by the dealership is superficial, insufficient and not updated, and needs to be investigated on all fronts. The technicians of the Via-Vas Commission, those who have to carry out the environmental impact assessment of the work, asked for new information on practically every aspect of the project in a 42-page report.

The requests for integration of documents concern compatibility with environmental constraints, the evaluation of costs and benefits, the description of all the planned interventions, the construction site system, the management of excavated soil and rocks.

The Mase requests more in-depth and updated data on the risk of tsunamis, on air pollution, on the impact of the Bridge on the marine and land environment and on agriculture, on waters, on the risks of subsidence and instability, on the flora and on fauna, noise and magnetic fields, on Natura 2000 protected areas of European importance.

Environmentalist associations such as WWF and Legambiente and local anti-Bridge committees speak of a "false step" and a "farce", and reiterate that "the project does not stand up" .

But it is above all the opposition that is riding the issue. For Marco Simiani of the Democratic Party , "the Ministry of the Environment sensationally disavows Matteo Salvini , effectively blocking the project".

The leader of the League himself was absent from the Services Conference, which was held at his Ministry of Infrastructure. «From the Ministry of the Environment comes a boulder on the Strait Bridge project», comments the leader of the M5S Giuseppe Conte , who speaks of «an old project, dating back to 2011/2012, full of flaws in terms of engineering, environmental, transport and financial".
