"Obviously, I'm well aware that justice reform is proceeding at a rapid pace, and I've factored in the potential consequences."
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, in an interview with Tg5, discussed the clash between the government and the judiciary over the Almasri case. " I see a political agenda surrounding some of the judiciary's decisions, particularly those regarding immigration issues, as if they were somehow trying to slow down our efforts to combat illegal immigration. Nevertheless, the flow of illegal immigrants into Italy has decreased by sixty percent, and we are working to do even better," Meloni continued. "I find the request for authorization to proceed against Ministers Nordio, Piantedosi, and Undersecretary Mantovano, who acted within the law to protect the safety of Italians, surreal."
Meloni reiterated that she finds it "even more surreal that they're asking for the case to be shelved because my ministers aren't governing without my knowledge, because I'm not Alice in Wonderland, I'm the head of the government, and I'm not, let's face it, just any Conte who pretended not to know what his Interior Minister was doing."
Faced with documents accusing the government, the Executive therefore claims to have acted in the best interests of the state. This is the defense argument, which emerged after lawyer Giulia Bongiorno reviewed the documents from the investigation into the repatriated Libyan general, for which authorization was requested to proceed against ministers Carlo Nordio, Matteo Piantedosi, and Undersecretary Alfredo Mantovano .
The process is underway: by the end of September, the Authorization Committee will have its report ready for the Chamber, and the Chamber will vote on the final bill by October, with the outcome seemingly in favor of the government majority.
