Eight days after the life sentence , Alessia Pifferi - the Milanese woman accused of leaving her 18-month-old daughter Diana alone at home to die of starvation - decided to start a hunger strike.

"She's very sick, she's destroyed," said her lawyer Alessia Pontenani , explaining that yesterday the woman made the decision to start fasting. “All she does is cry,” he added.

Alessia Pifferi, currently detained in the San Vittore prison, was sentenced by the Court of Assizes of Milan to the maximum sentence.

A psychiatric evaluation carried out during the trial established that at the time of the events the 38-year-old was capable of understanding and wanting, even if the defense has always maintained that she suffers from a "serious cognitive deficit".

Immediately after the sentence last May 13, Pifferi had told his lawyer that he wanted to "shut down" like little Diana.
