An elderly woman, not self-sufficient and bedridden for some time, died of starvation after her husband, the only one who cared for her, fell victim to an illness that struck him at home, leaving him no escape.

The tragic story took place in a house in Roccacasale, a small village about ten kilometers from Sulmona (L'Aquila).

After the discovery of the two lifeless bodies, the local prosecutor's office opened an investigation, but there would be few doubts about the dramatic fate of the two spouses, Angela Giuliani, 84 years old, and Salvatore Marino, 86.

The alarm was raised on 112 by an acquaintance who went to the couple's house every Wednesday to do household chores.

Having received no response to his phone calls, the man then turned to the Carabinieri and Fire Brigade who made the macabre discovery this morning.

Husband and wife, who have no close relatives in the village, were found in the bedroom. The doctor on call from the local health authority carried out the cadaveric examination.

The investigators immediately ruled out a violent death and also possible carbon monoxide poisoning since nothing unusual emerged from the checks carried out on the systems and the boiler.

«A very reserved couple», defines them as the mayor of Roccacasale, Enrico Pace.

Meanwhile, the magistrate on duty seized the house and acquired the summary information collected by the police.

But the picture appears, as mentioned, clear, so much so that an autopsy was not even ordered.
