A Ho Chi Minh City court has upheld on appeal the death sentence against Truong My Lan, the former real estate magnate at the center of Vietnam's biggest financial scandal, and one of the most serious in the history of the world economy. It is a $27 billion fraud with more than 40,000 victims.

Truong's lawyers – who ended up on trial with her husband (sentenced to seven years) – have appealed against the sentence pronounced in the first instance, but for the judges there is "no reason" to accept the request.

For the Vietnamese businesswoman, the only way to avoid the death penalty and serve a life sentence is to pay compensation of at least 9 billion dollars, a third of the amount at the center of the fraud. An exorbitant amount that the defendant will have difficulty putting together.
