The Trump administration has abruptly backtracked on revoking student visas for hundreds of foreign students.
In a federal court hearing, Justice Department attorney Joseph Carilli said that immigration authorities have begun work on a new system for reviewing and possibly revoking visas for international students, and that no further changes or revocations will be made until that process is complete.
The announcement followed a series of individual appeals filed by hundreds of students who were told their legal right to study in the United States had been revoked, in many cases without explanation. In some cases, the students had documented minor infractions, such as traffic violations, but in other cases there appeared to be no obvious cause for the revocation of their visas.
It is unclear how many student visa holders have actually left the U.S. after having their visas revoked, accompanied by threats of detention and deportation, often without clear explanation . According to the New York Times, a small number of students, including a Cornell University doctoral student, have decided to leave the U.S. voluntarily after giving up their legal battle.
