Fireworks, horns, Turkish flags and music. In many neighborhoods of Istanbul, readers of the main opposition party CHP are celebrating en masse the reconfirmation of Ekrem Imamoglu as mayor, after he had already won five years ago, wresting the city on the Bosphorus from the political movement of Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, which dominated it for over twenty years. With over 85% of the ballots counted, Imamoglu declared victory, obtaining more than 50% of the vote, while Murat Kurum, the former Environment Minister supported by Erdogan, remained stuck at 40%.

Imamoglu's opposition also wins the elections in Ankara and Izmir. According to initial assessments, this is Ergogan's heaviest defeat in his more than twenty years in power.
