No more arms to Ukraine if it doesn't sit at the table with Russia to negotiate. It is one of the ideas contained in the peace plan delivered to Donald Trump by two of his former national security advisors to put an end to the conflict. The initiative also requires the US to increase support for Kiev if Moscow refuses to negotiate.
The proposal, as reported by Reuters, was developed by General Keith Kellog and Fred Fleitz, both former chiefs of staff of the National Security Council during the Trump presidency. The leaked plan is the first articulated in detail and with contents circulating in Trump's entourage, and goes against the position held by the United States and Europe, but also by many members of the Republican Party. The Trump campaign, however, threw water on the fire by observing that only official statements by the former president or his staff should be considered official.
Ukraine is set to be one of the central topics of the debate between Trump and Joe Biden on June 27. The former president has reiterated on several occasions without providing details that if he wins the elections the war will end immediately and has harshly criticized the extent of American aid to Kiev .
For Biden's campaign, the plan is nothing more than a confirmation of Trump's repeated praise of the Russian president. “He praised Vladimir Putin at every opportunity, called him a genius for launching this war and openly said that he would force Ukraine to surrender to Putin,” criticized James Singer, the president's campaign spokesman. The White House echoed this: «Biden's support for Ukraine is clear. He has built a global coalition including more than 50 countries that support Ukraine in defending democracy against Putin's brutal invasion", underlined Adrienne Watson, spokeswoman for the National Security Council, reiterating that according to Biden "every decision" on possible negotiations lies with Kiev.
